Inflammation is defined as the body’s basic defense and repair mechanism against injury, infection, or allergy. Onset of inflammation is often accompanied by heat, pain, redness, and swelling which is a non-specific immune response. It is healthy and essential for inflammation to take place because it protects us from further damage, allowing us to identify the problem and to commence the proper treatment protocol.

What is Chronic Inflammation?

Understanding that inflammation is the body’s response to either internal or external trauma, sometimes the mechanism used to protect the body does not shut off even after the original trauma has been eliminated. The body is unable to rid itself of the foreign agent and the inflammation persists which determines the presence of chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a disease which stems from either acute inflammation or exists on its own and can have debilitating reactions within the body.

What diseases are linked to Inflammation?

The diseases commonly linked to inflammation are arthritis, asthma, tendonitis, bursitis, and inflammatory bowel disease just to name a few. Chronic diseases are inflammatory in nature such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, obesity, and cancer. It is also linked to many female difficulties like PMS, dysmenorrhoea, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia. The unknown is whether inflammation is the cause or a reaction to the disease so usually treatment is regimented with diet and exercise as these two factors can affect inflammatory responses within the body.

Solutions?

Some doctors would recommend topical creams such as Arnica or Traumeel which provide some relief from muscular or joint discomfort. Other doctors would prescribe medications like corticosteroids or Celebrex which reduces inflammation markers up to 53%, but long term use can cause other complications or death. The latest research has unveiled a product containing betalains, found in beets, which reduces inflammation markers up to 47%. It is an all-natural supplement with a plenitude of benefits and no side effects. Diabetics can also use this product because the betalains are extracted from the beets, thus removing the sugar from this super-food. Another solution is using tumeric powder. Tumeric powder contains curcumin, which studies have shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Circumin also has anti-oxidant properties, and can be used to manage a range of other conditions, including joint pain.
